Genetics, hormones including androgens and estrogens, enzymes, androgen receptors, and possibly even inflammation all seem to have a potential role to play in susceptibility to pattern hair loss. There are also some risks of other diseases developing in association with androgenetic alopecia. |
So what causes androgenetic alopecia / pattern hair loss anyway? The biology of female pattern hair loss is similar to that seen with male pattern baldness, although there are a few differences due to the different levels of hormone production and differences in expression of some of the enzymes that regulate the conversion of androgens. |
